Where do you go when you’ve lost your mojo?

Mojo being your spark, your magic, the special sauce that makes up your favorite version of yourself. ✨

Me? I go to Austin, Texas!

Austin is where I was born and raised, where I went to high school and undergrad, and where I met and married my husband. It’s where my roots are and the place I turn to when I need the comforting feeling that you get when you travel home for the holidays or family reunions.

And lucky for me, my home happens to be home to many inspiring events, including SXSW EDU! I’m excited to be heading home for this festival next week, March 3-6. 🀩🀠

If you can’t travel to your version of Austin, here are some other strategies to get your mojo back.

Earlier this week, I participated in a Design Your Life: Balance & Energy workshop with Katy Mogal.

In the workshop, Katy shared an overview of how we can apply design thinking to our daily lives to make intentional choices about how we invest our energy.

Here’s a quick exercise you can do, using design thinking strategies, to get your mojo back when you’re feeling depleted. ⬇️

Step 1

  • Measure your levels of satisfaction in four areas of your life: Work, Play, Love, and Health. On a piece a paper, draw a table like the one below. For each life area, measure how full or satisfied you are by drawing a circle on each line.

  • My real example is below.

Step 2

  • Reflect on your assessment and identify an area you want to improve.

Step 3

  • Design one or two incremental changes you can make to improve your balance in that area.

To help with Step 3, here are four design elements you can use to make incremental changes.

I included examples for increasing your satisfaction with Play.

  1. Reprioritize - Shift what matters most to create the outcomes you want. Ex: If you want to spend more energy on playful activities but you’re thinking, "Play is nice to have, but I have more important things to do," shift your mindset to something like, β€œPlay fuels my creativity, well-being, and productivityβ€”it's essential." Then prioritize playful experiences with friends, family, or colleagues this weekβ€”whether that’s a game night, a creative project, or a spontaneous adventure.

  2. Re-sequence - Shift the order of steps or priorities to create a better outcome. Ex: Instead of treating play as an afterthought or reward, you can re-sequence it to be a natural and necessary part of your life. One way to do this is by starting your day with a playful activity like a 5-minute dance break, doodling, or a friendly competition with your kiddo.

  3. Reframe - Shift your perspective from a problem-focused mindset to an opportunity-focused mindset. Ex: Instead of saying β€œI don’t have enough time for play," reframe your thought to β€œHow might I integrate play into my daily life in ways that energize me?” or β€œWhat existing activities could I reimagine as playful?”

  4. 2-for-1 Activities - Combine two needs into one activity. Ex: Blend play into activities you already do. If you want to see friends more and play more, you could plan a board game night instead of just going out for dinner. Or you could all go to an Escape Room or an arts and crafts workshop.

As you make intentional choices about how/where to invest your energy to get your mojo back, keep these design thinking practices in mind:

  • Set the bar low.

  • Do small experiments quickly, and learn fast.
